Documentary photographer, Effy Alexakis, and socio-cultural historian, Leonard Janiszewski, have been researching the Greek-Australian historical and contemporary presence in both Australia and internationally since 1982. Their combined project and archives, In Their Own Image: Greek-Australians, encompasses visual, oral and literary material and is acclaimed as one of the most the most significant in the country.
Effy Alexakis

Alexakis’ photographs are held in both public and private collections in Australia – most significantly in the Australian National Gallery, Canberra, the State Library of New South Wales, Sydney, and the Australian Embassy, Athens. She currently works as a freelance photographer after completing 25 years service as Senior Photographer with Macquarie University, Sydney. Alexakis has been ranked in the top ten portrait photographers in Australia and has been a recipient of significant grants including the Australia Council, Australian-Greek Presidential Awards and numerous heritage grants.

Leonard Janiszewski
Leonard Janiszewski

Janiszewski has held both a New South Wales History Fellowship and a New South Wales Ethnic Affairs Commission Fellowship. Both Alexakis and Janiszewski have been Research Fellows with the Department of Modern History, Politics and International Relations at Macquarie University in Sydney. Janiszewski is currently Curator with the Macquarie University Art Gallery. Both have served on numerous government and university-based history, literature and arts committees.

Various national and international touring exhibitions, four major books, three significant exhibition catalogues, over 250 book chapters, articles, conference papers, and three film documentaries have been produced by Alexakis and Janiszewski from material in their archive
